Harlan D. Abbas

December 20, 1940 - March 30, 2014

Harlan D. Abbas, 73, of Latimer Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Harlan was born December 20, 1940, in Franklin County, Iowa, to Harvey and Mildred (Fisher) Abbas. Harlan graduated from Ackley High School. He served his country in the United States army for two years before he returned home and married Marabelle Dreyer of Latimer. Harlan and Marabelle were married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer on June 27, 1964. They lived south of Coulter, raising four children on their farm. Harlan owned and operated a 7,000 bird laying house but his first love was always farming the land with his son Matt. He worked at Farmland Foods in Iowa Falls for many years. He also enjoyed bowling and was captain of one of his teams. Harlan sold Schaeffer Oil and enjoyed visiting with all his customers. He was affiliated with Faith Baptist Church in Hampton, where he participated in a small group Bible Study with many dear friends. After retiring from farming, Harlan raised a large garden and sold vegetables at the Hampton farmer market & other local farmers markets. He was known for his large candy onions & spring asparagus. Before his stroke, Harlan loved entertaining and barbecuing chicken for family gatherings and other large groups. He was a great husband, father and grandfather. Harlan is survived by his wife, Marabelle; his daughter Shanlyn Goodman (Vince) of Hampton; his daughter Michelle Niles (Ed) of Clear Lake; his daughter Theresa Feakes (Matt) of Winnipeg, MB; his son Matthew (Rochelle) Abbas of Latimer; his brother William Abbas of Cedar Falls; and his brother Kenneth (Janet) Abbas of Houma, LA; grandchildren Andrew (Liz) Goodman, Breanna Goodman, Caleb Goodman, Naomi (Shane) Wells, Heather Niles, Gabe (Britany) Niles, Isaac Niles, Michaela Niles, Terrell Feakes, Zachary Feakes, and Logan Feakes. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Mildred Abbas and his brother, Calvin Abbas.
