Hazel Harriette Wearda

Hazel Harriette Wearda, 90, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away Monday, July 02, 2012, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton in Hampton, Iowa. She was born on September 27, 1921, in Dumont, Iowa, to Henry and Anna (Schnapel) Freese. Hazel graduated from Dumont in 1939. She attended S.U.I nursing program for one year and then enlisted in the Air Force and served for 2 ½ years at Marana Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, where she served as Teletype Operator. Hazel spoke fluent (low) German and also served as a translator at the base where German prisoners were held. She was united in marriage to Richard Wearda on February 14, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Hazel attended Nursing School at NIACC and was then employed at Franklin General Hospital long term care facility for 30 years. Hazel and Richard spent their retirement years traveling and following Hampton and Dumont sport events. She was a member of the American Legion and the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton. Hazel is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard in 2009, brothers George, Lou, Ben, Bill, Joe and Henry and sisters Grace, Mary, Florence and Tillie. Burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery.
