    February 18, 1920 - January 27, 2022

John W. Ingebretson of Thornton, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022, at the Sheffield Care Center, twenty-two days away from his 102 birthday. John was born on the family farm in rural Thornton, to Alfred and Laura (Blewett) Ingebretson, on February 18, 1920. He was the only boy in a family of six children. John attended school in Thornton and graduated in 1938. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. John had a love for the land and for animals. John enjoyed reading Western novels by Louis L’Amour, sharing stories about his days in the Army, playing cards and cribbage, and spending time with his friends and family. John was a member of Thornton United Methodist Church. He was a kind, tenderhearted man who had no enemies and was loved by all who knew him. John left behind his nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Laura, sisters Alice Champion, Miriam Mares, Helen Carstens, Dorothy Conrin and Bethel Enabnit, and nephew Thomas Mares. Due to COVID, a private family graveside service will be held at a later date at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton. The Counsell Woodley Funeral Home of Thornton is caring for John and his family. Memorial contributions may be given in memory of John to the Thornton United Methodist Church or the
