Marylou Rice, 92, of Ackley, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at Grand JiVante in Ackley. Memorial services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Grand JiVante Chapel. She will be laid to rest at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until service time on Saturday at Grand JiVante. Counsell Woodley Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Iowa Falls is caring for Marylou and her family. Marylou (Bear) Rice was born on January 14, 1930, to Leslie and Dena (Eilers) Bear in their family home in Steamboat Rock, Iowa. She was the youngest of five children. She attended school at Steamboat Rock and graduated with honors. She was a starting forward for the Steamboat Rock girls’ basketball team and played in the state tournament final four her last three years in row. After graduation, Marylou went to Iowa State Teachers College for one summer session to qualify to teach school at Hughes Crossing Country School, where she taught for one year. She married Donald Oelmann in 1948 and had four children, and later divorced. She loved to golf and won the Ackley City Ladies Championship. She was an avid bridge player and played with some of the same ladies for almost sixty years. She was a wonderful seamstress, and also loved to crochet afghans for all of her family. Professionally, Marylou worked in the hospitality business as a hostess for Bishops restaurant in Waterloo, and subsequently for the Dubuque Inn, in Dubuque. She married Frank Rice February 13, 2009, in Ackley Iowa. Marylou passed away surrounded by her children on June 8, 2022. Marylou Rice is survived by her daughter, Deanna (Richard) Roelfs of Ackley, Iowa, daughter, Jane (Rex) Scatena of Monterey, California and son, Donald Scott (Linda) Oelmann of Waterloo, Iowa; grandchildren, Susan Blanton of Williams, Iowa, Melissa (Mark) Livingood of Aplington, Iowa, Richard Marc (Holly) Roelfs of Ackley, Iowa, Matthew (Megan) Roelfs of Ackley, Iowa, Amalia (Brandon) Lloyd of Monterey, California, William (Anne) Scatena of Arlington, Virginia, Dane (Rhandi) Oelmann of Dike, Iowa, Abby (William) Herkelman of Waterloo, Iowa; great grandchildren: Makenna, Samuel, Katherine, Richard Aaron, Morgan, Madigan, Maliah, Maxwell, Mitchell, Maielle, Merritt, Matther, Jackson, Emersyn, Jaxon, Dawson and Adrianna. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Dena Bear; brother, Edward Bear; brother, John Bear; sister, Ruth Fisher; sister, Andrea Hanson; daughter, Sally Blanton and husband, Frank Rice.
